What Is Romantasy? A Beginner’s Guide

Romantasy is exactly what it sounds like: romance + fantasy in one addictive, page-turning package. Think sweeping magic systems, high-stakes quests, cursed kingdoms, and chosen ones… plus yearning, tension, and a love story that hits just as hard as the plot twists.

Romantasy = Romance + Fantasy (What that actually means)

At its core, romantasy blends two engines:

·         Fantasy: A world that isn’t ours (or isn’t quite ours), with magic, mythical creatures, political intrigue, prophecies, wars, courts, or quests.

·         Romance: A central relationship with emotional stakes, character growth, and a satisfying romantic arc (often with a happily-ever-after or happily-for-now).

In some romantasy books, the romance is the main plot and the fantasy is the backdrop. In others, the fantasy plot is huge and the romance is a powerful thread running through it. Either way, you’re getting both: world-building + butterflies.

Spice levels explained (aka: how steamy is it?)

“Spice” is reader shorthand for how explicit the romantic/sexual content is on the page. It’s not about how good the book is—it’s just a heat gauge.

Here’s a simple scale you’ll see online (and in our stores):

·         No spice / Closed-door: Romance is present, but intimacy happens off-page or is implied.

·         Low spice: A few steamy moments, but not very explicit.

·         Medium spice: On-page intimacy with more detail; still balanced with plot.

·         High spice: Multiple explicit scenes; heat is a major feature.

·         Extra spicy: Very explicit, frequent scenes, often with kink-friendly or taboo-leaning elements (varies by book).

Two quick notes:

·         Spice isn’t the same as “romance.” A book can be deeply romantic with low spice.

·         Check content warnings. Romantasy can include darker themes (war, trauma, coercion, violence). If you like to know what you’re walking into, look for a content warning list. You can usually find these on the author's page if its not listed explicitly. 

Popular romantasy tropes (the fun stuff)

Tropes are familiar story patterns readers love—like comfort food, but with swords.

Here are some of the most common romantasy tropes you’ll run into:

·         Enemies to lovers: They start out wanting to destroy each other. Then… things get complicated.

·         Fated mates: Destiny (or magic) says they belong together—whether they like it or not.

·         Forbidden romance: One rule: don’t fall in love. Guess what happens.

·         Slow burn: The tension builds for chapters (or books) before anything happens.

·         Morally gray love interest: He’s dangerous, powerful, and maybe a little unhinged… but for you?

·         Royal courts & political intrigue: Schemes, alliances, betrayals, and ballroom tension.

·         Training arcs: The main character learns to fight, use magic, or survive the new world.

·         One bed / forced proximity: There’s only one room. One horse. One tent. Tragic. Somehow it's always a small bed too - with a dirt floor!

·         Beauty and the Beast vibes: A cursed, feared, or monstrous love interest with a soft spot.
