The vibe

Twenty-something Nathan Camber is fresh out of grad school—and fresh out of any desire to deal with a brutal job market. As a gay neurodivergent man, he decides to follow the one thing that’s always made sense: his lifelong hyperfixation on cryptids. He heads to the rugged woods of upstate New York to hunt the Salamander Man, a local lake-monster legend that’s basically “Nessie, but without the clout.” (Start small, his therapist says.)

Enter Mack: Nathan’s fifty-something landlord—grumpy, grizzled, handsome, and a total skeptic—who’s built a hard-earned life of safety and isolation deep in the woods. Mack wants peace. Nathan wants proof. And Nathan refuses to settle for a “normie” life, so he ropes the stoic recluse into helping him track the creature.

As the hunt heats up (and so does their attraction), they realize there’s more than one mystery lurking in the lake—and more than one secret between them.
