She practically lives at the office, leaving little time for anyone… except the occasional bit of mischief, like turning coworkers’ computer mice into the live furry version.

Nelson Copperfield is the wizard of small miracles: a golden-boy altruist who works in nonprofits and has always had a habit of helping people (especially Miriam), much to her annoyance. He’s also her high school rival—and after an unexpected reconnection at a benefit turns into one night of ill-advised passion, a burst of magical misfortune forces them into a supernatural quest across NYC.

As they race through an enchanted dumpling house, a Jinn-run CPA firm, and a poisonous leather shop in Little Italy, Miriam’s chaos magic keeps complicating everything—while Nelson can fix problems with a wave of his hand. The more they’re forced to rely on each other, the more Miriam starts to question her assumptions about “do-gooders”… and whether she can keep climbing at a firm that might crush the dreams of the wizard who’s stealing her heart.
